NEUROSURGERY

WHAT IS NEUROSURGERY?

When we talk about Neurosurgery, we refer to the medical specialty that deals with the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the nervous system and its coverings. Furthermore, although it has very well defined limits of action, it shares fields of research and work with other specialties such as Anesthesiology, Angiology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Oncology, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry or Traumatology.

Given the complexity of this specialty, surgical treatment is performed in very specific locations in the hospital and requires an infrastructure of operating rooms, anesthesia and resuscitation, as well as intensive care units.

To know when to see a neurosurgeon, it is important to recognize the symptoms and pay attention to the signals sent by our body. Suffering pain in the cranial area, neck and back may represent the presence of a neurological disease, being necessary to obtain a diagnosis by the medical specialist for recovery.

Similarly, feeling weakness in the extremities is one of the most common symptoms of pathologies such as sciatica and, in the most severe cases, it is possible to suffer cramps from the back of the hip to the knee.

Another warning sign to go to the specialist is the continuous numbness in certain parts of the body, which may be related to a nervous condition and involve the loss of sensitivity.

On the other hand, if at any time we suffer an accident or a blow to the head, neck or back, it is essential to visit our neurosurgeon for an examination and to know the effects of such impacts.
